Evanna Lynch was born in 1991 in Ireland. She attends Our Lady's College, an all girls Catholic school when not in filming as well as the Centre for the Talented Youth of Ireland during the summers to study Drama.
She was 14 when her father flew her to London to the open auditions for Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The producers held open auditions because they felt that Luna was too unique to be played by a conventional actress, they had three actresses that could act the part but none who could be the part. Evanna beat out more than 15,000 girls for the part.
Evanna has received high praise for her portrayal of Luna, with Rowling calling her "perfect" and critics noting her as one of the true standouts of the film.
In 2008, when Rowling received a James Joyce Award she noted that in writing subsequent Harry Potter novels, Evanna's voice was the only one she heard when writing Luna.
Evanna herself was a huge Harry Potter fan even before she was cast as the part of Luna. She was actually disappointed that she would miss the release of the 5th Harry Potter novel because she was hospitalized, but instead the hospital released her that morning and a local bookstore gave her an autographed copy. She attended the release in full Harry Potter fandom, with Harry Potter written on her nails, painted on glasses and "I Love Harry Potter" painted down her arms.
