This is the 10th post in our Movie of the Week series.
Equilibrium was technically released in 2002 and stars Christian Bale and Taye Diggs. But like many of Christian Bale's movies it had a relatively unknown presence in theaters. Once it hit DVD it became something of a cult legend much like American Psycho.
The movie is set in the dystopian future where feelings are outlawed. It was believed that emotions were what led to war and caused violence so in the future people must take injections which keep them from having emotions and anything that could potentially incite emotion must be destroyed - including all paintings and music.
The film centers around Grammaton Cleric John Preston, the highest ranking of all the clerics. John is completely devoted to his cause going as far as to cause the death of partner when he begins to feel. Things slowly start to unravel as John talks to one of the prisoners who is about to be killed for giving into emotions. Hell breaks loose when the top ranking cleric begins to question the authority.
This combination of 1984 and The Matrix combines for an absolutely stunning film with Bale giving an amazing performance as John Preston. Despite this the critical reception of the movie was terrible, most critics found the movie to be nothing more than fluff in an already overstuffed sci-fi genre. But for most it is simply fun and entertaining, and in the end that's what good movies are all about.
