This is the 7th post in our Movie of the Week series.

Newsies was a Disney musical released in 1992 starring Robert Duvall, Ann-Margaret, Christian Bale, and Bill Pullman. When it opened in theaters it was not a success. It was pulled almost immediately because of a lack of interest. It had the highest production cost of any Disney live-action movie of the time and it pulled out the lowest gross. Everything changed when the movie was found and embraced by "Baleheads."

These dedicated Christian Bale fans created a cult following for the movie and even held their own conventions in support of the Newsies movie. Despite the fact that critics were appalled by the film and felt it had nothing to offer, when the movie was released on video it became a cult success. After a wide protest the movie was finally released on DVD in 2002.

The movie was originally slated as a drama but ten weeks before filming Disney decided to turn it into a musical with 12 new songs. The plot for the movie tells about the great Newsies strike in 1899 in New York City. The focus is on the leader of the newsies, Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) who seeks to lead a strike against the newpaper conglomerate that raised the price of newspapers for the newsies to sell. The newsies work to get all of the working men, women and children of New York to protest their unfair treatment.
