This is the 34th post in our Musician of the Day series.
Chris Young was born on June 12th, 1985 in Tennessee. For as long as he can remember the young musician wanted to be a country singer. By grade school he had performed in children's theater, and his parents were always supportive, even buying him a guitar and paying for voice lessons.
By high school, Chris was completely dedicated to his music. His parents even helped him by renting out a storage box so that he could easily practice with his family and partners, something he did despite the rising southern heat. His work paid off in a big way, as he began performing in prestigious Nashville clubs, and even put out his own album, all before he even graduated high school .
The straight A student went to college but found that it was hard to continue performing and focus on school, so he put his classes aside to focus on his dream. He ended up getting a contract to play at the famed Cowboys in Arlington, Texas. Chris eagerly took the job and found that even playing four nights a week among the most discriminating of country fans, he continued to impress.
It was then that a fan insisted he try out for Nashville Star, a reality television program geared toward finding the next country star. The winner would receive a recording contract with RCA records, a label that Chris dreamed of being on. A friend financed his trip to Houston, where Chris not only made it on the show, but blew away the competition.
His debut album was released on RCA records in 2006 to much success. His first single Drinkin’ me Lonely rose to #42 on the Billboard country charts. His new album, The Man I Want to Be, was released on August 31st and features Chris’ first top 30 hit, Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song).
