This is the 25th post in our Musician of the Day series.
Zak Stevens was born in 1966 and became famous in 1992 when the lead singer for Savatage left the band in order to work on another band. Zak took over for Jon Oliva in 1993 and first appeared on their album Edge of Thorns. Jon continued to follow Savatage and vocals from both Jon and Zak can be found on Dead Winter Dead album.
The Dead Winter Dead album led to a collaboration effort with Trans-Siberian Orchestra in 1996. In 1997, Zak recorded what many consider his greatest album with Savatage, The Wake of Magellan. In 2000, Zak left the band in order to be able to spend more time with his family.
In 2002, he formed his own band which he called Circle II Circle. Their first album, Watching in Silence, was produced by Jon Oliva and was released in 2003. That same year Zak’s band left him to join Jon Oliva’s band Pain. Zak hired a new band and Circle II Circle has since released three albums including their most recent, Delusions of Grandeur which was released in 2008.
Zak has also released an album with Machines of Grace that was released in July of 2009.
Zak and Circle II Circle are currently working on a new album which they hope will be released in Spring of 2010.
