This is the 6th post in our Artist of the Week series.
Alex Grey was born in Ohio in 1953. Form an early age he had a desire to draw and an obsession with death. He would collect insects and dead animals and bury them in the backyard. He went to the college of Art and Design for two years and the Boston Museum School for one year. After this period Alex met up with his wife, and the two of them experimented with different drugs. Alex then went on to work at Harvard Medical School in the anatomy department for five years. It was here that he learned about the body and his fascination with anatomy and transcendence grew.
He continued working with the idea of transcendence and in 1979 he began work on the piece that would garner him much fame. Sacred Mirrors was the culmination of ten years work and is 21 life sized paintings. The pieces take anyone who sees them on a journey through their own divine nature.
His paintings are seen as glowing anatomical human bodies, portrayed as x-ray images of the multiple layers of reality. His images often involve religious symbols and images of spiritual bodies in relationships. Alex Grey's work has been exhibited all over the world, including New York City where a long-term exhibition of his work Chapel of Sacred Mirrors opened in 2004.
