Mad Men

This is the 8th post in our TV Series of the Week series.



Mad Men premiered on AMC in July of 2007. It was not long before the began acquiring massive attention for being historically accurate and a thrilling introspective drama. Critics were all in agreement about the brilliance of the series and soon awards began pouring in. In 2008 and 2009 the show won Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series-Drama. In 2008, Jon Hamm also won a Golden Globe for Best Actor-Television Series Drama. In 2008, it became the first basic cable series to win an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, along with five other Emmy awards.

The show details the life and interactions of the employees of the Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue. Set in the 1960s, Jon Hamm plays the lead as Don Draper, the creative director of Sterling Cooper. The show does an amazing job of capturing the social mores of the 1960s including drinking, smoking, adultery, homophobia, antisemitism and racism. The show pushes the boundaries and shows life as it really was in the not too distant past.

The show recently began its third season on August 16, 2009 and continues to impress critics and viewers alike.
