This is the 45 post in our Musician of the Day series.

Lil Rob was born Robert Flores in 1975 in California.

He grew up and became involved with gangs but would later cease his gang affiliation after witnessing some of the violence. Lil Rob was also a victim of this violence as in 1994 at the age of 18, his chin was shattered when he was shot.

He made his debut album in 1997 which sold over 200,000 units. He states that he no longer has any gang affiliations and that his music simply represents "Brown Pride" and that he is a Chicano rapper. The numbers 12 and 18 are tattooed on Lil Rob's arms because they are the numeric representation of L and R. 1218 used to be his tag when he was a graffiti tagger. In 2005 and 2008 he released two albums entitled 1218 pt. 1 and 1218 pt. 2.

Growing up in South Beach, California, Lil Rob developed a love of oldies music and he began to incorporate oldies songs into his own music. This would later be taken up by a number of different rappers but Lil Rob calls himself the first.

In 2002, Lil Rob was signed to Upstairs Records after producing numerous independent albums. His 1218 albums received commercial success with singles like Summer Nights and Bring out the Freak in You.

Lil Rob's latest album Love & Hate will be released on September 29th, 2009.
