This is the 12th post in our Movie of the Week series.

A Clockwork Orange was released in 1971 and is a satirical and futuristic take on the 1962 novel of the same name. The film was originally rated X because of an explicit sex scene, so Kubrick later removed the offending 30 seconds with something less offensive and the movie was re-released in 1973 with a rating of R.

The movie focuses on Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) who is a psychopath who takes pleasure in classical music, rape and ultra-violence. He leads a small group of thugs who take pride in terrorizing the city. Alex is eventually jailed and then volunteers to undergo an experimental aversion therapy that is geared toward solving the problem of crime in society.

The movie was hailed by many critics while others found fault in its extensive violence and sexuality. It was banned and censored by a number of groups in the U.S. and the U.K. because of the themes present in the film and the amount of sex and violence. Despite this it was nominated for a number of Academy Awards and won two Golden Globes, one for Best Drama and one for Best Actor.
