SuperTux

This is the fifty-second post in our Game of the Day series.

Super Mario Brothers spawned a sizable sum of sycophantic clones. These games continue to be produced today. Even now new code is written after the SMB code was released to the world. It reminds me of Tetris, so significant that it is doomed to be constantly reproduced with different graphics, in various languages, by disparate acolytes of game programming. SuperTux is one such reproduction.

It isn't bad if you like Mario, but aren't married to the idea of playing with him or Luigi. Or aren't effected by how much is completely ripped off and retooled to be penguin or snow-based. I'm not riffing on the game, it seems like harmless fun, but one can't mistake how much it strives to copy the source material.

It isn't just a 2D run-and-jump platformer as it proclaims, but rather one where you break bricks, squish some enemies, and stomp kick others. You can look at any one entity and match it up directly with something in the Mushroom Kingdom that it feels like part of the game is identifying those connections.

Aside from the obvious, I don't know who the audience is for this game. I got tired amidst the second level from recognition overload, too much like what I had played before on NES. So if you want to play a Mario-like game but as a Penguin, then this game is for you!
