This is the fourth post in our Movie of the Week series.
District 9 is a new Sci-Fi thriller released in August of 2009. This movie was directed by Neil Blomkamp and done in the Mock Documentary style. The movie is filled with interviews and supposed surveillance camera footage in order to tell the story. District 9 came in with a budget of $30 million, a figure which got blown out of the water with a $37 million opening weekend.
The movie features superb special effects as it tells the story of aliens who arrived in South Africa. Once they landed on Earth they find themselves trapped in District 9. Humans believed that they arrived preparing for an attack, but instead find out that the aliens are refuges. They are the only survivors left from a destroyed home world. The aliens are forced to remain in District 9 while the rest of world debates what to do with them.
Despite the low budget for a film of this scale, you won’t be disappointed by the effects, the actors or the screenplay. Everything is on par with this film, even if there are no big names to back it up. Critically acclaimed as an instant Sci-Fi classic, this movie is one that should not be missed.
