Gattaca is a sci-fi thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. It was released in 1997 and was embraced by the critics. It even received an academy award nomination for Art Direction.

The movie takes place in a futuristic world where a person's life is dictated by their genetics. Genetics have progress to the point that parents can ensure that their children are the best combination of their genes possible and rooting out any illnesses or problems. Children born through this genetic manipulation are considered to be the best and are therefore chosen for all jobs and opportunities while those born naturally are left to take the jobs that no one wants. Vincent Freeman is one of these natural births but has the dream of going into space, unfortunately that dream can never come true because his genes show that he is predisposed by heart disease.

Vincent deals with this problem by buying the DNA of someone who was born perfect but through a twist of fate became handicapped. By using this new DNA he is able to accomplish his goals, but his perfect new plans are threatened when there is a murder in the workplace. The investigation leads to the discovery of a hair that contained Vincent's real DNA.

This movie explores issues and topics that could very well be in our future in a way that is entertaining and approachable by all
