Stephen Moyer was born in 1969 in Brentwood, Essex. As a child he attended St. Martin's School in Hutton, Essex. He began to gain an interested in theater and it was around this time that he began making a name for himself with his own theater company called The Reject Society. and then he went on to graduate from the London Academy of Music and Art.

After he graduated he spent five years focused on performing in theater. He spent two years with the RSC acting in such plays as Romeo and Juliet, Columbus and The Thebans. He also played in the world premiere of Pete Townsend's rock opera The Iron Man.

He eventually moved on to television where he starred in a number of Channel 4 British television dramas. He also had guest roles in a number of television shows including Cold Feet and Waking the Dead. He made his screen debut with Prince Valiant which was followed up by Quills.

He moved on to play in a number of U.S. television shows in minor roles before finally landing the role for which he is most known. In 2008, he was cast to star in True Blood as Bill Compton a 173-year old vampire.
