This is the 56th post in our Musician of the Day series.

Anggun Cipta Sasmi was born in 1974 in Indonesia.

Anggun was the first daughter of Indonesian songwriter Darto Singo, who began training her from a young age. Once her father had perfected her singing voice, her mother began to act as her manager and began booking performances. She released her first album at the age of 12 and has been releasing albums ever since. In the early 90s she formed her own record company based off the success of her albums, but she did not keep it for very long because she sold it in 1994 in order to move her career to the international stage.

She first moved to the UK were she found life was much different and her music was not well appreciated. So she eventually gave up and moved on to Paris France. Anggun states that the minute she set foot in Paris, she felt home. In 1996, she was signed to a french record label and released her first french album Au Nom De Lune in 1997. The album became one of the most successful in France and peaked at number 34 on the French charts.

That same year she released her first international album Snow on the Sahara. The album became a huge success breaking into the top 20 in most countries and she became the first Asian to enter the U.S. charts.

Anggun has continued releasing albums and touring the world building upon the success of her first albums. Anggun's most recent album Elevation was released in 2008.
