This is the 62nd post in our Musician of the Day series.
Jedd Hughes was born in 1982 in Australia. Jedd grew up listening to his father's country music albums and it was not long before he started to play and take to the stage himself. At the age of 8 he won the Port Pirie Country Music Festival. At the age of 9 his father began giving him guitar lessons and by the age of f10 he was playing his own custom made acoustic guitar. At 12 he was chosen to represent Australia at the International Music for Youth festivals which was a three week tour of Europe.
Once his voice changed he spent his teenage years traveling as a sideman for a number of different country artists. After he graduated high school he went on to Levelland, Texas to study bluegrass at South Plains College. It was during a workshop at the college that Jedd met Terry McBride (McBride and the Ride). Terry was so impressed by Jedd's talent that he said if he ever came to Nashville they would write together.
He soon moved to Nashville and the two began working together. Jedd was in Nashville only six weeks when he auditioned to be the new guitarist for Patty Loveless. It took only an hour for him to be invited to join rehearsal and the next night he was onstage with Patty playing at the Grand Ole Opry. Soon after he signed with MCA records and began working on his own album.
Transcontinental was released in 2004 and rose to #60 on the Billboard Country charts. Today he can be seen as the opening act for Jewel's acoustic tour.
