Terrence "Terry" O'Quinn was born in 1952 in Michigan. He was one of 11 siblings and he attended both Central Michigan University and the University of Iowa. He changed his name to Terrence O'Quinn because there was another registered actor with the name Terrence Quinn.
He began acting in the 1970s while he was still at Central Michigan University. In addition to his acting he also wrote and directed the musical Orchestrina which starred Jeff Daniels.
It was in 1980 that he finally got onto the small screen with the role of James Roosevelt in F.D.R. The Last Year. He also got his first film role in 1980 as Captain Minardi in Heaven's Gate. He continued acting in small roles throughout the 1980s until he got a starring role in the movie The Stepfather in 1987. He played Gerald "Jerry" Blake and received wide praise for his portrayal of the delusional stepfather. He reprised the role in The Stepfather 2 in 1989 but this failed to be as big a success.
He continued to take on small roles in Television and movies among the most notable was his role as Howard Hughes in the Rocketeer.
In 1994 he got his first recurring role in a television series in 6 episodes of Earth 2 as Reilly. In 1996 he got a major role in the series Millennium as Peter Watts. After that he became a recurring character on a number of different shows including JAG, Alias, and the West Wing.
In 2004 he got his biggest break yet when he was given a starring role in the television series Lost as John Locke. Terry has even won an Emmy award for his performance on the show.
