This is the 71st post in our Musician of the Day series.

Scott Weiland was born as Scott Kline in 1967 in California. His name was changed to Scott Weiland at the age of 5 when he was adopted by his stepfather.

It wasn't until 1986 that Scott really began getting a band together. He met Robert DeLeo at a Black Flag concert and the two set out to form a band. After a few different ideas they finally settled on the name of Stone Temple Pilots. It was in 1992 that the band got their first album, Core, released. With songs on the album like Creep and Sex Type Thing, Stone Temple Pilots quickly rose to the forefront of the grunge movement.

In 1994 they released another album entitled Purple. The album was a major success and sold over 6 million copies. But it was at this time that Scott Weiland's heroin addiction began to make itself known. He was arrested the following year for buying crack cocaine but got off with probation. His drug problems worsened and he ended up holed up in a motel with Courtney Love shooting drugs.

This meant that Stone Temple Pilots had to cancel the tour that was set up for their third album, Tiny Music....Songs from the Vatican Giftshop. Even without the tour the album was a success and was certified double platinum, but the lack of a tour caused it to be quickly forgotten.

The band went on hiatus with the other members forming a new band with a new lead singer. Scott attempted to strike out on his own by releasing his own album as well, 12 bar blues. The album was a failure and it was in 1998 that Scott was caught once again buying heroin. This time he earned jail time.

Once released from prison the Stone Temple Pilots reunited and released the album No. 4. But personal problems between Scott and his wife and the band caused the Stone Temple Pilots to break up permanently.

In 2003, Scott was approached by Duff McKagen to lead a new band which was eventually called Velvet Revolver. In 2004, they released Contraband which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts. Velvet Revolver followed this up with Libertad in 2007 which was largely considered a failure.

In 2008, Stone Temple Pilots reunited and started a reunion tour. They are also rumored to have a new album coming out in 2009.

Scott also released his second solo album entitled "Happy" in Galoshes.
