This is the 75th post in our Musician of the Day series.
New Order was formed in 1980 by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris. They were formed after the suicide of Ian Curtis of Joy Division. The three men were the remaining members of Joy Division after Ian Curtis' death and they decided that they would continue on, but not under the same name, so they formed New Order.
They decided to bring in Morris' girlfriend as well to play on Keyboards and guitar as she had also played with Joy Division a number of times. For the first year the band continued with the same type of music they had played with Joy Division, they even released a few songs that were written in the weeks before Ian Curtis died. But in 1981 they were introduced to the New York club scene and that caused them to take the dance vibe and merge it with their punk rock sound.
Their first album Movement was released in 1981 before the band decided to change their musical direction and their second album was released in 1983 and was called Power, Corruption and Lies. This album featured the dance vibe that they had enjoyed in New York and which was becoming popular. This album though was largely a disappointment to fans because it did not include the song that the band had become most known for. "Blue Monday" was not included on the album but it was released as a single and it became the best selling 12" single of all time in the UK. But other singles released from the album cemented New Order's place as one of the top bands in dance music.
The band continued to release albums throughout the 80s and their popularity continued to soar as their music was even featured in 80s cult classics like Pretty in Pink. The music of New Order began to change as the music of the time changed and as the band continued to be inspired by new types of music.
The band released Republic in 1993 before taking an 5 year hiatus. They regrouped in 1998 and released their next album Get Ready in 2001. The band toured together and released some live and greatest hits albums as well as Waiting for the Sirens Call in 2005. But problems arose in 2007 when Hook decided to go to the media and announce that the band had split up and that New Order was over. Morris and Sumner reported that they were shocked Hook could not come to them first and stated that they would continue even without him. Hook was furious stating that they could not keep the name without him.
But in 2009 Sumner admitted that making music with New Order was no longer the fun it used to be and that he had found that fun with a new band.
