This is the 15th post in our Movie of the Week series.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a musical film released in 2001 based off the Broadway musical of the same name. The movie was adapted and written by John Cameron Mitchell who also took on the title role.

The movie tells the story of a fictional rock band which is fronted by an transgendered singer from East Germany. The singer is originally named Hansel and this feminine German, meets a U.S. soldier named Luther and falls in love. The two decide to marry so that Hansel can leave East Germany, the only problem is that the marriage can only be between a man and a woman. So Hansel's mother gets him a new name, a new passport and a sex-change operation. The operation does not go as well as planned and Hansel, who has now become Hedwig has a two inch piece of flesh between her legs.

The pair marry anyway and move to the U.S. After a year Luther leaves Hedwig for a man and Germany reunites. To get over her depression Hedwig forms a band which is composed of Korean-born army wives.

The movie won numerous awards and gained a huge cult following, but as can be expected there were a number of people against the controversial nature of the film. When Mitchell performed on the David Letterman Show, he was told that he was not allowed to rip off his wig during the song Tear Me Down like he was supposed to. Mitchell agreed but then ripped off his wig right after the song. The producers edited out the end of the song because they wanted their viewers to think Mitchell was a woman and not a man in drag.
