This is the 18th post in our Movie of the Week series.

Primer was released in 2004 and gained a reputation very quickly. The first reason for this is that the film was very low budget, and by low I mean very low. The movie was made for $7,000. But Primer is more than just a low budget film it is a deep and intricate movie that explores and questions certain aspects of science and of the consequences of time travel.

In the movie two sciences are trying to create a machine that reduces the weight of any object. They succeed but in the process realize that they have created a time machine. What then occurs is that the two men use the time machine for their own gain but they slowly begin to realize the consequences of their actions. The time machine created by the pair also has limitations such as the fact that it can only go backward in time and only when it has been activated in the past. For example someone wanting to travel to yesterday would have had to turn the machine on yesterday and then turn it off when they are ready to travel to that point. They also have to wait in the machine for the same amount of time they wish to travel back in time.

Because of the realistic nature of the movie and the complex plot and characters this low budget wonder was hailed as a great science fiction film. The movie was well received by critics with many calling it a very original movie and even rotten tomatoes calls it a movie for the "thinking man." It has also won a number of film festival awards and it continues to impress and prove that a large budget is not necessary in creating a great movie.
