This is the 19th post in our TV Series of the Week series.
WKRP in Cincinnati was a widely popular show about a struggling radio station that aired from 1978 until 1982. The show was character driven instead of plot driven, where most of the comedy would come from the personalities and quirks of the characters rather than from crazy plots.
The show was nominated for 10 Emmy Awards and won a Humanitas Prize. It was well-received but was cancelled because a constantly changing time slot made it hard for viewers to keep track. Once the show became syndicated, it became a blockbuster hit. One episode Turkeys Away was named by TV Guide as one of the greatest episodes of TV history. In this episode Arthur Carlson, the general manager, releases turkeys from a helicopter as part of a Thanksgiving publicity stunt. The turkeys unable to fly, plummet to their death and force shoppers to flee in terror. This leads to the classic line said by Carlson, "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."
The first season has been released on DVD to the delight of fans but licensing restrictions caused a number of changes to be made. When it was aired WKRP in Cincinnati was known for playing contemporary music by big name artists. The problem was that these licenses were only for ten years, so in syndication and in DVD releases many of these songs have to be replaced by generic versions and some character dialogue has to be dubbed over to allow for the music changes.
