This is the 67th post in our Musician of the Day series.

Imogen Heap was born in 1977 in London. She began writing songs at the young age of 13 after her parents' divorce. At the time she was already classically trained in piano, cello, and the clarinet. She later taught herself how to play the guitar, the drums, the array mbira, and the Hang.

She was 18 when she signed her first record contract with Almo Sounds. Her debut album i Megaphone was released in 1998. After this problems with the label caused it to be sold to Universal Records. Imogen Heap was one of many artists that was simply dropped by the label.

In 2002 Imogen formed Frou Frou with Guy Sigsworth. They released their first album Details in 2002 and then went on tour. Once they returned they were told that their label would not be picking them up for a second album. They offered to sign Imogen as a solo artist but she refused under the belief that they had mishandled the Details release.

In 2003, Imogen stated to her fans that she was going to be working on a solo album. She dove head first into the process and even remortgaged her flat in order to cover the production costs. The album was entitled Speak for Yourself and though it was not released until 2005, a number of the songs had been pre-released and even featured on The O.C.

The album was a huge success and Imogen licensed the album to Sony BMG where it went on to sell over 120,000 copies.

In 2008 she began working on another album and once again the songs began to become popular long before the release of the album. One of which, Not Now, But Soon, was featured on the official Heroes soundtrack.

The album, Eclipse, was released in August of 2009 and became the most successful of all her albums climbing into the top ten in a number of different genre and world charts.
