Wizards & Warriors

This is the third post in our Game of the Day series.

One of, if not the, first medieval fantasy games my sibilings and I bought and played on the Nintendo Entertainment System was Wizards & Warriors. You play the brave knight Kuros on his way to rescue the princess in a side-jumping sword-swinger which takes you through several boss-protected and maiden-hostage areas. It's a linear action-adventure from start to finish, but rather than side to side, you often go up or down as well.

Only battles at the end of the levels tend to last any decent amount of time, the huge variety of most enemies is offset by their being decidedly easy to kill. The danger lies in missing a jump, since your primary mode of transporation is leaping about in a full set of armor, or being overrun by pesky monsters. There's always some type of buzzing thing flying in periodically, ground-based roamers, and floor-poppers.

Holding a blade alone against all this magician-based madness would be challenging, but once you find the throwing-dagger it's all over for your foes. Later you can upgrade it to an axe which actually feels faster (it has a smaller graphic, perhaps that's it). These weapons get flung on each swing, go in the direction you're moving at the time, and boomerang back to wherever you are. A well-placed toss can cut through a bevy of creeps.

One favorite aspect of many in this slashing romp is the upgrade to your jumping with the Boots of Levitation. You can get them in a later level or time a series of jumps in the first underground level to procure a set early. These allow you to push magically off from the ground at a nominal speed, stop after a moment, and then drop or jump from there in the air! Thus you can get into secret areas or just more easily into normal ones.
