This is the thirtieth post in our Celebrity of the Day series.
This “warrior princess” not only filmed her hit show in New Zealand, but was a born kiwi as well. She grew up with a love of acting and starred in a number of different plays in high school. After starting in what she called a “really bad, cheesy, commercial for travel” she was given her first real acting break as part of a New Zealand comedy troupe called Funny Business. Her big break came when she was offered a part in the television series Hercules and the Amazon Women. Unfortunately this big break almost cost the role that made her career, because even though the producers believed she was perfect for the part of Xena, she had already made an appearance as a different character in Hercules.
Lucy refused to take this as an answer so she died her light brown hair a much darker color, and like magic the producers no longer saw her as being confused with her previous character and cast her as Xena. After performing in three episodes of Hercules as Xena, she got her own spinoff series called Xena: Warrior Princess the role for which she is most famous. In a surprising twist, though she nearly lost Xena for fear she would be confused with another character; in Xena: Warrior Princess she played six different characters, including Xena. Though Xena has been cancelled Lucy Lawless can still be found attending conventions and acting out scenes to the immense enjoyment of her fans.
Recent projects have been with a few cameos on different television series, and the role of D’Anna Biers in Battlestar Galatica. She is also playing Lucretia in the television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand which is set to premier in 2010.
