This is the 9th post in our Musician of the Day series.
T. I. as he is known was born Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. in 1980 in Georgia. He started rapping at the age of nine and was only nineteen when he was offered a record deal with LaFace Records. He started off as T.I.P. after his childhood nickname Tip, but he changed the name to T.I. in respect for fellow rapper Q-Tip who also joined the label.
His first album was released in October 2001 under the name I’m Serious. The album did relatively well for a newcomer as it broke into Billboard’s Top 30 Hip Hop chart. After the moderate success of his first record he left LaFace and started his own recording agency, Grand Hustle. Under his own label he produced an underground album In da Streets which sold 20,000 records. With his rising popularity he decided to sign with Atlantic Records and quickly produced a third album Trap Muzik in 2003.
The album rose to number 4 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Billboard Top R&B Hip Hop chart. The record continued to rise in sales and eventually earned platinum status. In 2004, he released another album, Urban Legend, which held numerous collaborations with other famous rap artists. The record gained even more success than his previous albums.
In 2007, T.I was arrested by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and charged with possession of three unregistered machine guns, two silencers and possession of firearms by a convicted felon. Though he faced 30 years, he was able to get the sentence reduced to one year and one day. Despite the arrest he released his sixth studio album Paper Trail in 2008.
