This is the third post in our Movie of the Week series.
The Dark Crystal is a fantasy film which was released in 1982. The movie is directed by master puppeteers Jim Henson and Frank Oz, the same brilliant creators of the Muppet Show. The movie was groundbreaking for its time for its use of animatronics that had never before been seen or used in film.
The movie is much darker than the normal fare brought forth by Henson, but the film explores the relationship between good and evil and teaches some very good lessons for children. The movie focuses on the Dark Crystal which has been damaged by an Urskeks. With the crystal damaged chaos roams supreme and monsters roam the once peaceful land.
Thus comes Jen, believed to be the last of his kind, because of attacks by the monsters, he sets off in search of the missing piece of the crystal. It is his journey to restore order and peace that brings the magic and wonder to the story.
The movie gained great critical acclaim both for its story and special effects. In 1983 it even won a Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film.
