This is a post in our Celebrity of the Day category.

Despite doing most of his work in acting and directing in New Zealand, Michael Hurst is not a kiwi; rather he was born in 1957 in England. His first real break in acting came in 1987 when he won the lead role in the movie Death Warmed Up which was the first real spatter movie for New Zealand. That same year he got a television role in the series Heroes about a band searching for fame. Hurst played Dave Nelson, the band’s drummer. In 1986 Hurst starred in a Dangerous Orphans with Jennifer Ward-Leland whom he would marry two years later. His next three films also allowed him to work with his wife, which leaves no wonder to the amount of chemistry in The Footstep Man, Desperate Remedies, and I’ll Make You Happy.

During this time he was also working as the star in the television thriller Typhoon People in 1993 and his most well-known role as Lolaus in Hercules: the Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. After making a name for himself in acting Hurst moved on to directing with Jubilee in 2000 and Love Mussel in 2001.

The two biggest recognitions to his talent and accomplishments in television and movies came in 2003 when he was awarded and Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Award and in 2005 when he was designated an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005 "for services to film and the theatre".
