This is the second post in our Movie of the Week series.
The NeverEnding Story is a movie based on a German book of the same name written by Michael Ende. But the end result of the movie differed so greatly from the book that Michael Ende sued the producers, he lost but succeeded in having his name removed from the opening credits.
The movie opens with a young boy named Bastian, who comes across a book called the NeverEnding Story. It is when he begins to read the book that the story comes alive. The book focuses on the land Fantasia which is being destroyed by The Nothing. A young warrior named Atreyu must defeat The Nothing and save Fantasia.
With a host of wonderfully fantastic characters, the NeverEnding Story is one of the most beloved children’s movies of all time. When it was made in 1984 it was the highest budgeted film ever made in Germany. Despite its large budget the movie only covered the first half of the book and thus prompted a sequel The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter.
The NeverEnding Story received high praise from critics of all kinds including Roger Ebert. Despite this the movie did poorly in theaters, not even making enough money to cover production costs. That changed with the movie was released on video, it became one of the highest selling videos ever released.
