Guitar Hero

This is the tenth post in our Game of the Day series.

Music is not one of my strengths, which is one reason I respect musicians so much. While most people at least learned one instrument in school, I skipped band class. In fact I very clearly remember declining the introductory semester in 7th grade out of fear of failure. Knowing a bit more about myself now, I would have reversed that, but oh well ... now we have plastic guitars with buttons!

Admittedly, I don't play Guitar Hero much anymore, but it was a huge craze among my friends for an intense period of time. It started with a conversation between my friend Jevon and myself at some gathering at a bar. I had thought the game sounded fun, he had just heard of it and used to play guitar, and we enthusiastically pondered the concept.

Melissa got me the PS2 version with a wireless guitar and the first three games for that Christmas and I was off! Okay, well mostly. At first it was very frustrating, but soon I was rocking out like the best of the phonies and enjoying myself.

I found my biggest problem to be lacking the ability to remain in rhythm, an infestation of chaos. The longer a pattern would stretch the more likely I would bust it out of an increasing pressure to maintain. On the flip-side Jevon could, and still can, churn out the necessary repitions endlessly without batting an eyelash. My strength lay in the more eratic chord riffs.

One song in particular defeated me in the first Guitar Hero and I never beat it. Later at a party I hosted, my friend Autumn and I played through the entire second one. I think being slightly intoxicated helped as much as having a buddy to pull through the tough spots. I now have a PS3 and put the PS2 in storage along with that game, but it's left me with some great social memories!
