This is the 8th post in our Musician of the Day series.

Grant Lee Buffalo is a rock band formed by Grant Lee Phillips. Grant Lee was born in 1968 and grew up being influenced by rock and country music alike. In the late 80s he took his love of music and formed the band Shiva Burlesque which released two albums, Shiva Burlesque and Mercury Blues. The band split up soon after, but Grant Lee recruited Joey Peters and Paul Kimble to form a new band which would eventually become Grant Lee Buffalo.

They were lucky enough to land a weekly gig at CafĂ© Largo while they worked on their music. In 1993, they released their first album named after their single Fuzzy. After the album’s release the band spent a year touring opening for acts like Cracker and Pearl Jam. In 1994, they released another album which they entitled Mighty Joe Moon. The album lead to the creation of their first music video. Their second album allowed them a gig opening for R. E. M. and to Grant Lee being voted Male Vocalist of the Year by Rolling Stone.

The band released two more albums Copperopolis in 1996 and Jubilee in 1998. Like their other albums these failed to be a commercial success causing the band to break up in 1999. Since then Gratn Lee has been working on a solo career. In 2001 a 30 track Grant Lee Buffalo collection was released in Britain, where the group had achieved success, and came to the U.S. in 2004.
