This is a post in our Celebrity of the Day series.
English born in 1976, Anna Friel had original desires to become a barrister but she was bit by the acting bug after she finished college and has never looked back. She landed a few bit parts in soap operas before taking the role that would make her live in soap opera infamy.
She was granted the role of Beth Jardache in the soap opera Brookside in 1992. Her character started off as nothing special, she was sexually abused by her father and then one night she, along with her mother, kills her father. It was nothing too spectacular for a soap opera until 1994 when it was revealed that Beth was gay, and almost overnight Anna Firel became an icon for the gay community. But she wasn’t done yet, she was a part of the first ever prime time lesbian kiss, which remains today as one of the most talked about soap opera moments in history.
After leaving the show Anna divided her time between low-budget indie films and her love of Broadway. In 2007, she took a starring role in Pushing Daisies, which only lasted two seasons. Anna Friel prefers to stay out of the limelight and the big named pictures, though she did try for the part of “Tonks” in Harry Potter. This was after she found out that “Tonks” is romantically involved with Reamus Lupin (Daniel Thewlis) who is Anna Friel’s real life husband.
