Okay, so I just looked this up and it's not Sop With Camel, but that's how I remember it called (for whatever reason so that's what I'm entitling this post in our Game of the Day series!
My first computer was something we called Frankenstein (this was before we knew that that was the name of the doctor, and not the monster) which my mom had had put together from some shady dude in Centralia at his crappy shop. It ran DR-DOS and the monitor was orange monochrome. A year or so later I saved up and bought my friend Aric's Tandy 1000 off him for $200 since his family had recently acquired a 386 with a VGA card/monitor. Anyway, one of the few games I got with it was this one and I played it incessantly.
Even though the Tandy 1000 could display up to 16 colors, it wasn't standard EGA, and besides this game was only CGA (4 colors). The sound piped pitifully through the PC speaker, but was sufficient to emulate a motor-like sound indicating how much the engine was working. You'd launch your little plane (on a 2D-plane, ha!) horizontally and then proceed to bomb buildings and dogfight the computer's own planes. As I recall there was some skill involved in trying to dive, shoot, and recover all at the same time, using the keyboard alone of course.
I believe you could adjust the difficulty and I got to the point of beating that one level in every capacity. For some reason, it was extremely short but very emergent, like Mario Brothers I suppose, and without a ticking time limit it felt urgent without an arbitrary end. Running out of fuel, obviously, would end your attempt but more often I'd simply crash into something. The fondest moments I can recall were "tricking" the computer into destroying its own assets / planes somehow. Now and then I'd even being able to pull out of a dive when they weren't.
Finally, if you blew everything bad up without exploding or crashing yourself, then a cheesy sunset (assuming that's what the gigantic red sphere was) and you'd fly off into it. Here's a video of the version I played, but for some reason there's no enemy planes (a different difficulty?).
