This is the 90th post in our Musician of the Day series.



Roch Voisine was born in 1963 in Canada. Roch originally wanted to become an ice hockey player but in 1981 he was severely injured playing baseball and was therefore prevented from pursuing that goal. He went on to attend the University of Ottawa and earn a degree in Physical Therapy.

His musical debut came in 1986 when he sang in front of 50,000 people at la Rhonde amusement park in Montreal.

In 1989 he released his first album Helene. The album was a huge hit selling three million copies, but it was not only popular in Canada but also in France, Switzerland and Belgium. The following year the album was awarded the Best Album prize by Victoires de la Musique.

He went on a European tour in 1991 which lasted until 1992 and ended with his final concert being broadcast on TV to 14 million viewers.

In 1993, he released I'll Always Be There, with both the single and the album becoming huge English language hits.

Since then he has to continued to alternate between English and French albums. His french albums are popular in Europe which his English ones are popular on Canadian radio.

Roch Voisine also has his own statue at the Musee Grevin in Paris.
