This is the 107th post in our Musician of the Day series.
Mazzy Star was formed in 1989 by David Roback and Hope Sandoval after their previous band Opal disbanded. Mazzy Star is a funn band but it is completely controlled by Roback and Sandoval. They write all the music and control everything for the band, the other members get minimal credit and they currently consist of Jill Emery (bass), Keith Mitchell (drums), Suki Ewers (keyboard) and William Cooper (keyboards, violin)
They were soon signed to Rough Trade Records and released their debut album She Hangs Brightly in 1990.The album was an odd mix and was a post-punk re-imagining of the dark psychedelic nature of The Doors on The End. The album has some folk and blues inspired songs as well.
Rough Trade Records fell in 1991 but the band was picked up by Capitol Records and released their second album So Tonight That I Might See in 1993. The album included the song "Fade into You" which became a top 50 hit in both the U.S. and the U.K.
Their third album Among my Swan was released in 1996 to less success.
After the release of the album the band went on tour through 1997. After that they were not heard from again until 2000 when they did a small European tour during when they debuted new songs which they stated would be on an upcoming album.
Despite the band not having a performance since 2003 or a record since 1996 Sandoval stated in a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone that the band was still together and was still working on a fourth album.
