James McAvoy was born in 1979 in Scotland. He was into acting from a young age and was a member of the PACE Youth Theater before graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2000.
His first film role came in 1995 with The Near Room. This was eventually followed by roles in Regeneration and Lorna Doone.
In 2001 he appeared in an episode of Band of Brothers which boosted his popularity and recognition. This was followed by a recurring role in Early Doors and a co-starring role in State of Play.
His big break came in 2005 when he was cast as Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
The following year he earned a starring role in the Last King of Scotland as Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. The role earned him a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor and a BAFTA Rising Star Award.
In 2007 he had roles in two critically acclaimed films Becoming Jane and Atonement. He earned much acclaim for his portrayal of Robbie Turner and was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
In 2008 he starred in Penelope and Wanted.
He has a number of upcoming roles including Wanted 2, Gnomeo and Juliet, The Last Station and the Conspirator.
