Ellen Kathleen Pompeo was born in 1969 in Massachusetts. Once she finished school she traveled the country looking for work and trying to break into an acting career. In Miami she was approached by fashion Photographer Andrew Rosenthal and in New York she was approached by an agent to do commercials.

It was soon after this that she appeared in commercials for Citibank and L'Oréal. In 1996 she got her first television role playing Jenna Webber in the "Savior" episode of Law & Order. Three years later she got her next role in an episode of Strangers with Candy. In 2000 she had roles in both Law & Order and Get Real. In 1999 and 2000 she had a few minor film roles before earning a cameo role in Catch Me if You Can in 2002.

In 2003 she had roles in both OldSchool and Daredevil (in which she played Karen Page).

She continued to get small roles in film and movies until she got her big break in 2005 when she was cast as the lead in Grey's Anatomy. Ellen plays Meredith Grey on the show and will continue to do so in the upcoming seasons. The show has since become her only acting endeavors.
