Patricia Piccinini

Patricia Piccinini

This is the 20th post in our Artist of the Week series.

Patricia Piccinini was born in 1965 in Sierra Leone but she moved to Australia in 1972. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Australian National University. After that she went on to attend Victoria College in order to earn a bachelor's in fine arts in 1991.

After her graduation she became one of Australia's leading contemporary artists. She works with a wide variety of media from sculpture to video to drawing and digital prints. She even recalls making a creature out of raw pigskin.

Patricia Piccinini's art also takes on a number of different forms from highly surreal and almost unbelievable creatures which she creates with both sculpture and digital prints to pieces that represent the impact that technology has made on life. She does this by anthropomorphising inanimate objects and presents them with a high degree of industrial finish.

Her main artwork reflects her interests in issues such as bioethics, biotechnologies and the environment.

In 2003 Patricia Piccinini was chosen to represent Australia at the Venice Viennale. It was here that We Are Family was exhibited.

There is little that can be said about Patricia Piccinini's art except that it has to be seen to be completely understood.
