Kevin Henkes

This is a post in our Author of the Week series.

Kevin Henkes was born in 1960 in Wisconsin. As a child he was interested in painting and thought he would be a painter. That changed his junior year in high school when his professors began encouraging his writing efforts.

He quickly discovered that children's books combined his love of art with his writing skill.

Today he is a writer and illustrator of children's books which tend to feature mice as the main characters. He says that most of his books are about his experiences growing up as one of five children in Wisconsin.

He wrote his first book his freshman year in college. This first book All Alone was published in 1981 by Greenwillow Books. This was quickly followed by more than 30 others.

In 2004 he wont the Newbery Honor for Olive's Ocean and in 1994 he won the Caldecott Honor for Owen.

In 2005 he won the Caldecott Medal for Kitten's First Full Moon.
