This is a post in our Musician of the Day series.
Flogging Molly was formed in 1993 when David King joined forces with Ted Hutt, Jeff Peters and Bridget Regan. They formed a Celtic rock band and wrote a few songs before Ted and Jeff left to return to an old band. Dave and Bridget stayed together and began scouting for other members and eventually the current line-up was born.
The current members are Dave King (lead vocals, guitar), Bridget Regan (Fiddle), Dennis Casey (guitar, vocals), Matt Hensley (accordion, concertina), Nathan Maxwell (base guitar, vocals), Bob Schmidt (mandolin, banjo) and George Schwindt (drums, percussion).
The band's name comes from the bar Molly Malone's where the band would play every monday night and they felt like they were "flogging" it to death.
In 1997 they released an independent live album Alive Behind the Green Door. In 2000, they released their first studio album Swagger. They released two more studio albums and two more live albums before releasing Float in 2008.
Float was considered to by the Associated Press to be "One of the most important CD's of the year, if not the decade."
While touring to promote Float, Bridget and Dave were married in a private ceremony in Tokyo, Japan.
The band has recently announced that they will be releasing another live album in 2010.
