Greg Bear was born in 1951 in California. Even from a young age he was interested in writing and wrote his first short story at the age of 10. At the age of 15 he managed to sell one of his stories to Famous Science Fiction. It wasn't until the age of 20 that he would sell another, but by the age of 23 his work was regularly appearing in magazines. In 1973 he graduated from San Diego University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In 1979 he published his first novel Hegira. He continued publishing novels and in 1983 he published his first collection of short stories. That same year he was nominated for his first Nebula award for his short story Petra. Since then he has been awarded five Nebula awards and is one of only a few authors to win in every category. He has also been awarded two Hugo awards and has been labeled as the "best working writer in hard science fiction" by The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Science Fiction.
To date he has written more than thirty books and dozens of short stories. He has served on political and scientific action committees and has even advised major companies like Microsoft, the US Army, The CIA and Homeland Security among others.
